Pittsburgh high school Research Experience in Physics (CMU-PREP)

July 7 - July 24, 2025

Program Description

We are welcoming 2-4 summer research participants from Pittsburgh area High Schools for an immersive 3-week long program in cellular biophysics! Ideal applicants are rising juniors and seniors who have excelled in their previous chemistry and biology classes. We will be teaching the fundamentals of molecular biology techniques in genetic engineering, strain selection, and biophysical characterization using spectroscopy and live-cell fluorescent imaging. Each day we will have in-depth discussions of the techniques in the morning, followed by lab work in the afternoons to gain familiarity and confidence in pursuing novel research questions.

All participation materials will be provided to the students at no cost, lunch will be provided each day, and transportation to and from campus will be provided as needed. We will meet from 10am-4pm, M-Th, for the entirety of the 3-weeks.

Contact Gabrielle Illava with any questions.
